Men’s Health Week: How Kinesiology Helped My Career

Did you know we spend about one-third of life at work?

In an ideal world, we’d all enjoy what we do each day. It’s a sad fact that so many of us don’t like our jobs, others are completely stressed out by a demanding role or awful colleagues, while many others complain they don’t have a work-life balance. Maybe you even recognise yourself as all three?

But don’t just take it from us! We speak with Simon, a long-time client who credits Kinesiology with turning his career around.

What do you currently work as and what was your working life like before Kinesiology?

“I’m a marketing manager. I’ve always worked for big corporations where the expectations are extremely high. I was always under stress and had a lot of anxiety.”

How has Kinesiology improved your career?

“Kinesiology didn’t just address my anxiety (the anxiety I had already at work and the anxiety I was bringing into work with me) but it made me be more present in the moment, to be able to do a better job, to make better goals, and get promoted. The last three jobs I’ve been involved with, I’ve been headhunted. Those opportunities just didn’t come up before; I’d go to an interview, not be able to think straight and stuff it up.”

“Kinesiology makes you confident. There’s a difference between bravado or putting on an air of confidence, with being calm and fundamentally confident within yourself. And people notice that. Kinesiology also gives you more of a sense of who you are and alignment with yourself, so you start to think ‘Does this job really suit me?’ and ‘Does the environment suit me?’. You begin to look after your own interests more.”

Has Kinesiology changed how you communicate with clients?

“Absolutely. Anxiety takes away the capacity to communicate effectively and be in the present. You can use all the communication and professional dealing techniques you want but if you’re sh***ing yourself, you can’t even get the words out of your mouth.”

“Now instead of sitting in a meeting feeling not good enough, belittled, worrying about the ‘what if’s’ of whether I can meet expectations, I feel more focused on the client and I can reflect more on the conversation as it’s happening. Clients feel like they’re working with someone they can trust, and they have confidence in you.”

Did colleagues notice a change in you?

“Instantly. It’s the new energy you bring – it’s written all over your face. It really changes the dynamics with other people.”

How had you dealt with stress previously?

“I sought help before, but it was more along the lines of counselling. But, for me, it didn’t go far enough. It could help me to think differently, but those underlying issues were still there. So I could think differently but I’d still be stressed out.”

What would you tell other men looking to help their career with complementary therapies?

“All my mates know that I get Kinesiology. The primary challenge for blokes is that stigma of getting help or the perception [of complementary therapies]. But they’re becoming more accepting. Life is absolutely full on for most guys and if you get them in a quiet moment to check how they’re going, they say they’re stressed. They know they need to look into things that will ease the stress.”
