Take your personal trainer career further

If you’re in the fitness industry, you know great coaching is so much more than good form and a checklist.

In this day and age, it’s not good enough to be one-dimensional in your career.

The fitness industry is one where you must be multi-skilled and knowledgeable in a variety of areas. Adding knowledge of Kinesiology and other complementary therapies to your repertoire will give you a greater insight into what your clients are subconsciously thinking, why they’re behaving in a certain way, and what exactly is holding them back.

We spoke to personal trainer Eloise Coyne, who took up Kinesiology studies to complement her fitness career, about her thoughts.

How has Kinesiology helped your career as a personal trainer?

“I have progressively developed my people skills, which marries in with my knowledge of the human anatomy and passion for assisting others to help themselves live a happy, healthy life.”

“Kinesiology allows people to drop their mask, their ego and their fears, which are all gradually hindering them – whether this is physically (in the gym), mentally (in the workplace), emotionally (between relationships). I’ve already had many fellow industry-leading trainers request I work with their clients as they’re either slowing with progression or experiencing full barriers towards their goals.”

How can complementary therapies help others working in the fitness industry?

“Complementary therapies provide the balance to the fitness industry. Let’s use a client attempting to lose body fat percentage as an example. You may not realise it, but ‘losing weight’ is a stressful goal. This can be amplified with lifestyle factors: work stress, family stress, lack of sleep stress, or poor nutrition stress. Exercise, too, is a stress. It encourages the fight-or-flight to drop the additional unnecessary fat.”

“Kinesiology calms the nervous system on a subconscious level. Without Kinesiology, of course there is still potential for success. But with correct application of Kinesiology, individuals can achieve their goals without hindering their enjoyment and lifestyle.”

Thinking this might be for you too? Here’s why upskilling in Kinesiology will make you a better fitness coach:

Kinesiology will help address mental barriers

How many times have you had someone say they ‘just can’t do it’ or ‘it’s too hard’, when you know they absolutely can. And you know they just need to believe in themselves. Kinesiology helps people get to the root of the problems and clear toxic thought patterns.

Kinesiology will help address physical barriers

Physical and mental barriers overlap quite a lot. A client may think they can’t do those extra few reps or they will never be able to do a particular exercise, but you know that the human body can be pushed further. If it is a physical problem, Kinesiology can help guide them through many physical imbalances – muscular pain, chronic pain, and sports recovery – with time and the right treatment.

Forget one-size-fits-all

Every single program you create will be tailor-made to a particular client. Most likely you already do this, but Kinesiology gives you a better insight into:

  • Their history
  • Their beliefs
  • Their wants and needs
  • Their current state of mind
  • What is likely to stop them attending
  • What is limiting their success, and
  • Whether they want routine and structure or a variety of exercises.

You’ll find you’ll be so much more in tune with your clients and able to help them in a more holistic way.
